Lynn is a former Mayor Pro Tem of the City of Charlotte, serving on the City Council of Charlotte for fourteen years—four years representing District 6 and ten years as an at-large representative. She has resided in Charlotte for the past 25 years. Prior to her first election in 1989, Ms. Wheeler served on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission for four years, as Vice-Chairman of the Commission and Chairman of the Zoning Committee. Ms. Wheeler chaired the City Council’s Budget Committee and its Economic Development and Planning Committee for 12 years.
She served as Vice-Chairman of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Development Corporation and as Chairman of the Carolinas Urban Coalition. She also chaired the Mayor’s Regional Light Rail Task Force. Lynn has served on the Boards of Directors of the Charlotte Center City Partners, the North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, the Community School of the Arts, the North Carolina Dance Theater, the Charlotte Regional Partnership , Charlotte Whitewater Park, Historic Charlotte, the University Research Park, the Urban League. and the American Cancer Society. She serves on the Queens University Law School Advisory Committee and the Greater Enrichment Board. She is also a member of the Board of Advisors of the Children’s Theater.
Currently Lynn is also a member of the City of Charlotte Zoning Board of Adjustment, the CRVA’s VAC, the Friends of Johnson C. Smith University Board of Advisors, and the Law and Community Foundation.
Lynn is a graduate of Leaderhip Charlotte, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department’s Citizen’s Academy and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Sheriff Citizen’s Academy. She served on the Grand Jury in 2007 in the capacity of foreman.
Ms. Wheeler was the recipient of the Charlotte’s Best Magazine’s “Woman of the Year” award in and was named one of Charlotte’s 25 Most Powerful Business Leaders” by Charlotte’s Best magazine . Also Lynn has received the Convention & Visitor’s highest honor the Crowning Achievement Award. She received the readers award for “Best Member of Local Government” in Creative Loafing newspaper, as well as the reader’s award for Best City Council Member. She was a nominee for the Women’s Equality Day award and served as the Co-Grand Marshal of the Martin Luther King Day Parade. She was named a recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 1999 Keepers of the Dream Honor Roll. Lynn also received the Good of the Society award from the American Cancer Society as well the American Cancer’s Fund Raising award.
Lynn Wheeler is a former Political Analyst and reporter for WBTV news.She served a a co-host on the Danny Fontana Show and currently has a bi-monthly segment on the Pete Kaliner Show on WBT-1110 AM called Word on the Street with former Mayor Pro Tem Lynn Wheeler. She has written daily pieces for Qcitymetro on two civil rights tours with civil rights activist Julian Bond. Lynn has also been a frequent columnist for the Business Journal and Charlotte’s Best magazine.
